According to Cointelegraph, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis cancelled a campaign event where he was expected to announce the acceptance of cryptocurrency contributions for his 2024 presidential run. The cancellation was due to the approach of Hurricane Idalia, which hit Florida's coastline on August 30 before moving into Georgia. DeSantis has been active on social media and in press conferences, informing residents about evacuation orders and other relevant information related to the hurricane. Since announcing his campaign in May, DeSantis has taken positions relevant to digital asset users, including vowing to ban central bank digital currencies if he wins the presidency. His campaign website currently only accepts fiat donations using a credit card. DeSantis would be one of only a few candidates to accept donations in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ether. Crypto contributions have not historically been a deciding factor for candidates in federal office races, with Andrew Yang's 2020 campaign being a notable example.
