The fake WalletConnect wallet app has been on Google Play for 4 months and has been downloaded about 10,000 times

PANews reported on September 28 that according to Decrypt, a fake wallet app that was on the Google Play Store for four months stole over $70,000 worth of cryptocurrency in a phishing attack, and was subsequently taken down. The malware masqueraded as the popular Web3 protocol WalletConnect, luring unsuspecting users to a website and tricking them into authorizing transactions, thereby gaining access to their funds. According to a report by Checkpoint Research, the app was downloaded a total of 10,000 times, but only 150 people fell for the scam. The actual WalletConnect uses QR codes to enable secure communication between cryptocurrency wallets and dApps, allowing users to approve transactions and interact with dApps without exposing their private keys.
