Uninstall Now: This Android App Is Secretly Stealing Crypto

A fake WalletConnect app has been installed over 10,000 times on Android devices via the Google Play Store, successfully swiping over $70,000 in crypto thus far.

Crypto users, beware—yet another malicious Android app is trying to steal your funds.

A fake "WalletConnect" app that appeared on the Google Play Store this year successfully swiped over $70,000 from an estimated 150 victims who downloaded the app and connected their crypto wallets, according to a report from cybersecurity researchers at Check Point.

The app was first released in March under the name "Mestox Calculator," but then changed its name several times. It also uses the name "WalletConnect - Crypto Wallet." Another malicious listing tied to the same attackers launched in February as "Walletconnect | Web3Inbox."

Check Point suspects that the "WalletConnect - Crypto Wallet" app creators generated fake five-star reviews because the reviews seem generic and don't relate to the app's features at all. But the app also received over 20 reviews calling it a scam, with one victim claiming they lost $615 worth of Tether's stablecoin cryptocurrency by connecting their crypto wallet to the app.
