YEREVAN (CoinChapter.com) — In compliance with Brazilian regulations, Elon Musk’s X platform has started suspending accounts linked to misinformation. This move follows court orders from Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

X Suspends 11 Accounts Over Misinformation in Brazil

On September 18, X suspended 11 accounts accused of spreading false information in Brazil, including those tied to Allan dos Santos and Paulo Figueiredo, both based in the United States. Consequently, these actions were part of an ongoing investigation into misinformation campaigns linked to supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

According to reports, other platforms had previously banned these accounts, and now Justice Moraes, who continues to lead efforts to counter misinformation in the country, is scrutinizing them.

X Appoints Legal Representation to Comply with Brazilian Law

In line with Brazilian law, X has announced it will appoint new legal representation in Brazil. Social media platforms operating in the country are required to have a legal entity to handle such matters. This decision is crucial for the platform to continue operating in Brazil without further legal issues.

As a result of this, X can ensure compliance with local regulations and avoid future penalties. The court ruling also includes potential fines for users accessing X via VPNs, which could result in daily fines of $9,000.

Justice Moraes’ Actions Target Misinformation

Justice Alexandre de Moraes has spearheaded Brazil’s crackdown on misinformation. His recent orders to suspend accounts followed unrest allegedly stoked by fake news campaigns. Subsequently, the court’s decisions have garnered support from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with the government endorsing efforts to combat misinformation.

Although Elon Musk has criticized these actions as political censorship, accusing Moraes of behaving like a “dictator,” the Brazilian Supreme Court upheld the judge’s rulings. This highlights Brazil’s firm stance on curbing the spread of false information, particularly in light of political tensions.

Technical Glitch Temporarily Restores X in Brazil

On September 17, a technical issue temporarily restored access to X in Brazil during a transition to Cloudflare’s servers. Authorities confirmed this as a technical error, not an attempt to bypass the court’s orders. A spokesperson from X’s Global Government Affairs clarified that network infrastructure changes affecting other South American countries caused the situation.

X remains under strict observation in Brazil as it works toward compliance with the ongoing legal orders. Users trying to access the platform through VPNs continue to face potential fines.
