Midwinter Entertainment has officially closed its doors after the cancellation of its anticipated game, Project T, which was being developed as a spin-off of Dead by Daylight under Behaviour Interactive.

Multiple employees confirmed the closure, sharing news of their layoffs on social media. The shutdown follows nearly seven years of development efforts under Behaviour Interactive’s ownership.

Project T cancelled due to market viability concerns

The decision to cancel Project T came after an internal playtest and evaluation by Behaviour Interactive. According to the studio, despite some positive feedback regarding the game’s fun factor and playability, it failed to meet expectations in terms of commercial viability. This prompted the decision to discontinue the project. Although some players expressed enthusiasm after testing, the company concluded that market risks outweighed the game’s potential, leading to its cancellation.

Former employees speak out on studio closure

After the shutdown, several former Midwinter Entertainment employees took to social media to express their shock and disappointment. A lead in animation and art mentioned that their journey with the company had “come to an abrupt end” due to the closure. Similarly, a senior sound designer confirmed the company’s shutdown, and a lead game designer remarked on the sudden and unexpected decision.

One developer who worked on Project T for several years highlighted the contrast between the studio’s internal feedback and Behaviour Interactive’s final verdict. According to the developer, during a recent playtest, the game received a strong rating of 92/100 for fun and playability. Despite this, Behaviour Interactive determined that the game posed too many commercial risks and ultimately canceled the project.

Behavior Interactive continues workforce reductions in 2024

Midwinter Entertainment’s closure is part of a broader pattern of layoffs at Behaviour Interactive in 2024. Earlier in the year, the company reduced its workforce by approximately 3%, followed by another 95 job cuts in June. The behavior attributed these reductions to a strategic restructuring focusing on its core business areas.

This latest wave of layoffs, alongside the termination of Project T, highlights Behaviour Interactive’s ongoing reorganization. While the company has launched other projects, such as The Casting of Frank Stone, an interactive horror game developed in collaboration with Supermassive Games, the future of the company’s workforce remains uncertain. It is unclear whether additional cuts or further restructuring will occur in the coming months.
