Coinspeaker US Senate Propose to Hold National Security Tests on Blockchain

The United States Senate Committee on Armed Services is now mulling the use of blockchain technology in order to conduct national security tests in a secure environment. As a result, the Senate Committee directed the Secretary of Defense, Retired General Lloyd Austin, to test potential applications using blockchain technology for national security applications and supply chain management within the US Department of Defense (DOD).

On Tuesday, July 9, the US Senate Committee on Armed Services issued the fiscal report for the year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). It also includes specific authorizations for all wings of the armed defense forces.

While recognizing the potential of blockchain technology, the Committee seeks to enhance the supply chains of US national defense and economic competitiveness. The report notes:

“The committee notes that blockchain technology has the potential to enhance the cryptographic integrity of the defense supply chain, improve data integrity, and reduce the risk of the manipulation or corruption of certain types of data by near-peer competitors.”

The Senate committee is urging the Department of Defense (DOD) to investigate blockchain applications to enhance national security and create secure, transparent, accountable, and auditable data for supply chains. To advance this initiative, the committee has instructed Secretary Austin to deliver a briefing by April 1, 2025.

Six Key Findings of the Blockchain Briefing

The Senate committee stated that the blockchain briefing must include six key findings. This includes a pilot program with R&D efforts thereby exploring the use of blockchain technology in national security applications including cybersecurity for critical infrastructure assets, supply chain management, and procurement accountability.

Other tasks involve assessing the advantages and potential risks of blockchain for tracking and managing supply chains, evaluating the current adoption of blockchain in the supply chain sector both domestically and internationally, such as in China and Russia, and determining feasibility and cost projections.

The blockchain and crypto industry of the United States is taking a turn for the good with lawmakers showing openness towards digital assets. According to a July 8 update on the campaign website of Republican Party presidential candidate Donald Trump, the Republican National Committee has approved a draft policy platform that includes support for cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin mining.
