Big tech's carbon footprint is outpacing that of Bitcoin, with Amazon alone producing more CO2 emissions annually than all Bitcoin mining worldwide. Since 2019, when major US tech firms started disclosing their emissions, they've released more CO2 than Bitcoin has since 2014. Bitcoin's estimated annual carbon footprint is around 65.4 million metric tons, less than Amazon's self-reported 71.54 million metric tons in 2021. Adding Google and Microsoft's emissions takes the total above 100 million tons per year. Data suggests that big tech companies in the US have emitted more CO2 since 2019 than all global Bitcoin mining operations have during the cryptocurrency’s entire existence.
