In 1988, Danish cryptographer Ivan Damgård co-authored the first paper on MPC during his PhD studies at Aarhus University. Damgård also co-invented the Merkle–Damgård construction, a foundational element in cryptographic hash functions. By the 2008 financial crisis, Damgård was a full professor and had founded Partisia, a Denmark-based tech group. Partisia initially applied MPC to solutions for the Danish and Norwegian governments and multinational corporations before integrating it with blockchain for private deployments.
