One of the main goals of the Surge is to achieve more than 100,000 transactions per second (TPS) across #etherreum and its layer 2 (#L2 ) solutions, while increasing interoperability, stated #VitalikButerin , co-founder of Ethereum.

Vitalik Buterin Outlines Goals for Ethereum

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has laid out the goals for the next phase of Ethereum's development, known as the "Surge." In his blog post on October 17, Buterin highlighted the key objectives for the Surge, which include reaching over 100,000 TPS not only on the main Ethereum network but also across layer 2 solutions. He also emphasized the need to increase interoperability between these layers to ensure Ethereum functions as a unified ecosystem rather than a set of separate blockchains.

Achievements and Challenges of Ethereum's Current Roadmap

Buterin praised the achievements of Ethereum, especially following the March Dencun upgrade, which introduced several scaling improvements, including cheaper data storage and reduced fees on L2 networks. However, he acknowledged that new challenges have emerged, particularly criticism from users claiming that L2 networks are "stealing" users and revenue from the main Ethereum network.

The Need for More Secure and Trustless L2s

Buterin stated that Ethereum needs to make progress in areas such as data availability sampling, improving data compression, and enhancing the trustworthiness of L2 networks. Improving the user experience is also crucial. The development of Ethereum rollups, which aim to be as secure as the main network, has been slow due to concerns about potential code errors.

For robust future scaling, it is essential that L2 solutions inherit Ethereum’s core properties, enabling a more stable and efficient growth of the entire ecosystem.

Scaling the Ethereum Mainchain

Buterin also emphasized that not only L2 solutions but also the core Ethereum chain itself needs to scale to handle growing demand. Increasing the gas limit could be the simplest solution, but it poses centralization risks due to higher costs for stakers. Another option would be to reduce the costs of specific operations and computations without sacrificing decentralization.

Improving the User Experience in the L2 Ecosystem

Buterin stressed that using L2 networks should be as seamless for users as interacting with the Ethereum mainnet. Interoperability between L2 networks should be improved so that users can easily transfer tokens between chains without manually bridging or swapping tokens to pay for gas.

Moving from Sharding to Rollups

Ethereum’s original ETH 2.0 plan included sharding, a process that would split the blockchain into 64 smaller chains. However, in 2020, Buterin shifted away from this concept in favor of rollups, which are L2 solutions that move execution off the main chain while maintaining its security.

"Our task now is to finalize the rollup-centric plan and solve the remaining issues while preserving Ethereum’s robustness and decentralization," Buterin wrote.
