Scammer Steals 45kg of Gold Jewelry by Swapping with Lead Blocks, Sparks Outrage Online
A gold shop employee in Urumqi, Xinjiang, is at the center of a scandal after stealing approximately 45.8 kg of gold jewelry, worth around 18.94 million yuan ($2.66 million), over three years. The employee, identified as Hu Hui (alias), executed her scheme by replacing the gold with lead blocks of equal weight, igniting heated discussions on Chinese social media.
Authorities report that Hu, a team leader, took advantage of her position by working overtime and being the last to leave each day. Struggling with financial difficulties, she was encouraged by her boyfriend to continue the theft after initially forgetting to return the jewelry.
In April, shop owner Mr. Ma discovered significant discrepancies during a business review and alerted the police. Following an investigation, Hu was identified as the main suspect. She confessed to replacing the jewelry with lead to deceive the shop during inventory checks.
The stolen funds were used to finance a lavish lifestyle, including real estate and luxury vehicles. Police have since recovered over 5 million yuan worth of property linked to the crime.
The audacity of Hu’s actions and the prolonged theft without detection have left many netizens in disbelief.
