Google's cloud division has introduced a new blockchain remote procedure call (RPC) service to support web3 development.

The RPC lets developers access blockchain data and functionality through API calls. It's compatible with the Ethereum JSON-RPC standard so developers can integrate the service into their existing applications with minimal adjustments.

At launch, Google Cloud’s "Blockchain RPC" service supports the Ethereum mainnet and its test networks, with plans to extend support to additional blockchain networks over the coming year.

Google Cloud noted that its RPC service is tailored to a broad audience, from startups that require a simple entry point into the blockchain space to large enterprises that need a dependable, high-performing infrastructure solution.

It would compete with existing RPC providers such as Infura, Alchemy, QuickNode, Ankr and others, which allow developers to interact with the blockchain without running a full node.

The firm has rolled out a free service tier that allows up to 100 requests per second, which it says is sufficient for building real-time and data-intensive applications.

Google Cloud already provides other blockchain-focused infrastructure services, such as node hosting and data analytics for several blockchains, including Ethereum, Solana and Aptos.
