Would you like to learn how #StefanThomas lost the password to his USB stick containing 7,002 Bitcoins and how hackers managed to crack this password? We use a variety of methods to ensure the security of digital assets, but sometimes these methods can backfire. This is exactly what happened to Stefan Thomas!

Thomas lost the password to an encrypted USB drive containing millions of dollars worth of Bitcoin, putting him in a difficult situation. In late September, a hacker known as Tom Smith sent Thomas a cryptic message: "query voltage again." This message was proof that they had managed to crack the password of the #USB stick on Thomas' IronKey S200 model.

Smith and the Unciphered team developed a secret method to decrypt Thomas' USB stick. Although IronKey devices are designed to permanently erase their contents after 10 wrong guesses, the Unciphered team managed to bypass this security measure and crack the password. They worked for nearly eight months, scanning the USB memory for vulnerabilities and using various techniques to decipher the cryptographic structures inside.

By discovering security flaws left by IronKey's manufacturer, the team was able to use a precision laser cutting tool and chemical solutions to access the chip carrying the cryptographic secrets. Despite their success, Thomas declined the Unciphered team's offer of help, having already made deals with two other cracking teams.
