According to PANews, Malaysian authorities have arrested seven individuals suspected of stealing electricity for Bitcoin mining. ACP Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof, the police chief of the Sepang district, stated that these individuals had no prior criminal records. The authorities' objective is to investigate illegal Bitcoin mining activities involving power theft. Local police reported the seizure of 52 Bitcoin mining devices and other electronic equipment, with a total estimated value of 250,000 Malaysian Ringgit (approximately $57,000).
This enforcement action is part of a broader crackdown on electricity theft associated with Bitcoin miners. Last month, Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, revealed that cryptocurrency miners in Malaysia had stolen at least 3.4 billion Ringgit (around $777 million) worth of electricity between 2018 and 2023.
