According to Odaily, a remote village in the mountainous region of Niigata, Japan, known as Yamakoshi, has attracted 1700 'digital citizens' through the sale of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to support and sustain its aging population. The project, led by local residents, manages a collection of NFTs called 'Koi,' which serve not only as identity markers for Yamakoshi's 'digital citizens' but also act as governance tokens, allowing participation in the village's decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) voting.
