Meta could be looking to invest in AI characters and profiles in the near future. According to an AI executive at the firm, there could be an increase in AI-created profiles and characters on Facebook. Meta has been working on its AI tools since 2023, introducing several products across Facebook. It includes hundreds of AI-generated characters after its launch in July.
While the AI characters are still private, Meta expects them to be a standard feature on the app for a long time. According to Meta’s vice president of product for generative AI Connor Hayes’ comments on Financial Times, the profile will operate like regular accounts. He noted that users would be able to create bios and pictures generated by AI and use them to share AI content on the site.
Meta wants to launch AI-generated text-to-video tools
Meta has planned to invest in its AI arm over the next few years, making the platform engaging and fun for its users. Presently, users can leverage Meta’s AI to create photos and as an assistant. In addition, Meta wants to launch its text-to-video tool that will put content creators on AI-generated content.
However, the rapid growth in people using AI has been a source of concern to people, especially experts. They believe that there should be special laws in place that will prevent the spread of misinformation using this technology. According to former head of Meta’s creation innovation team Becky Owen, without rules in place, AI-driven accounts could be used to spread fake information.
She also fears the influx of many AI accounts, which could end up driving away real content creators. According to Owen, AI is devoid of emotion or real-life experiences, which makes them less relatable to people. However, a spokesperson from Meta has discussed the issue with Fox Business, highlighting the benefits. He noted that the company’s AI studio will provide tools for users.
The spokesperson also noted that creators can model the characters using their tools. They can be used for basic tasks such as providing explanatory videos, and other how-to content. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also mentioned in April that the potential of AI is still unrealized. He feels it is a wise investment for both the company and users, noting the present positive signs.
