Will quantum computing destroy Bitcoin? Will Satoshi Nakamoto's one million Bitcoins be compromised?
Quantum computing currently does not pose a threat to Bitcoin but represents a potential future risk. Present technology, such as Google’s Willow chip, lacks the capability to crack Bitcoin’s hash and signature mechanisms. However, early Bitcoin addresses using the “Pay to Public Key” (P2PK) format, including Satoshi Nakamoto’s one million Bitcoins, may be vulnerable to future quantum attacks due to public key exposure. The Bitcoin community can address these risks by adopting quantum-resistant cryptography, enhancing user practices (e.g., avoiding address reuse), or implementing hard forks to secure vulnerable assets.
