Pump.fun, a decentralized platform enabling the creation of Solana-based memecoins, is under intense criticism following disturbing incidents broadcasted via its livestream feature. The platform, which allows users to promote their tokens through community-driven tools like livestreams, has been flagged for hosting alarming behavior, sparking debates about moderation and accountability.
On November 25, a crypto community member known as Beau raised concerns on X about a livestream showing a user threatening suicide if their token failed to hit a specific market cap. Beau urged Pump.fun to intervene immediately, calling for the livestream feature to be disabled and support extended to the individual. “The feature is already out of control,” Beau added.
Reports of other troubling incidents soon surfaced. These included a user firing a gun out of a window whenever their coin’s value increased and a child threatening violence against family members over token prices. In one particularly harrowing claim, a participant threatened a school shooting if their memecoin didn’t rise in value.
Calls for Stronger Moderation Intensify
The platform’s livestream feature has been labeled a “pipeline of felonies” by critics demanding either stricter content moderation or a complete shutdown of the functionality. One user implored the platform to deactivate livestreams until robust safeguards could be established, stating, “Turning on a camera to showcase your own depravity to the world isn’t noble or novel.”
In response, Pump.fun’s pseudonymous leader, Alon, defended the platform’s moderation efforts, emphasizing that the team actively monitors livestreams, images, and comments. “We have a large team of moderators working around the clock and engineers enhancing our ability to handle increased activity,” Alon stated.
Despite these assurances, the community remains skeptical, pressing for greater transparency and immediate action to prevent harmful broadcasts.
Uncertain Future for Pump.fun Livestream Feature
While Pump.fun acknowledges the severity of the incidents, it has yet to outline specific changes to its livestream feature. Critics argue that the platform’s existing measures are insufficient, urging leadership to prioritize user safety over engagement metrics.
The controversy highlights the delicate balance between decentralization and accountability, with platforms like Pump.fun facing mounting pressure to address harmful content without compromising their decentralized ethos.
