How VITAL works

This mechanism not only enhances the security of the network, but also ensures the accuracy of state verification.
VITAL can also operate using optimistic zero-knowledge proofs (ZK proofs), where VITAL operators ask SQUAD operators to create a ZK proof for a disputed state root instead of a binary agreement. This mode of operation also allows verification of intermediate proofs that do not require on-chain, further strengthening processing efficiency and security.
Why is VITAL so critical?
VITAL is critical to Mach AVS because it leverages VITAL to provide a fast finality layer. Compared to the pre-confirmations provided by traditional rollup serializers, the confirmations provided by VITAL are more powerful due to their underlying economic support, which allows assets to be withdrawn instantly.
In understanding this, we can look at the life cycle of rollup transactions on networks such as Arbitrum or Optimism today. These networks use centralized serializers to process user transactions and issue transaction receipts as proof of soft finality. However, because soft finality is issued by a single centralized serializer, the guarantees provided are mostly based on a "trust me" commitment. Specific implementation of proofs of validity
In AltLayer, the rollup network generates proofs of valid state transitions called proofs of validity, which enable VITAL operators to verify the state transitions of a rollup without access to the entire state. In fact, they only need:

VITAL reduces the possibility of disputes on the underlying Layer 1 by detecting fraud at the serializer level at an earlier stage. In short, VITAL acts as a lower court for fraud rulings, while the underlying Layer 1 acts as the ultimate Supreme Court. Therefore, compared with rollups with serializers, VITAL provides better finality guarantees, which we call Tier 2 Finality.
