According to The Information, OpenAI is considering switching from a limited profit company to an unlimited profit model. CEO Sam Altman told shareholders during the week of June 10 that this shift could cause the nonprofit board to lose control of the company.

OpenAI is currently valued at about $86 billion. Its current structure is described as a partnership between a nonprofit and a limited-profit sector, according to its website.

The profit cap is intended to incentivize research in the field of general artificial intelligence (AGI) while maintaining the company's vision. As for why this shift was necessary, OpenAI said that the "donations" required for the company to carry out its work were insufficient and a new cash injection model was needed to incentivize stakeholders.
