Key points

  • To celebrate the first recognized bitcoin transaction in 2010, Binance is planning pizza parties at various locations.

  • A number of online and offline events, activities and games will take place around the world.

  • Bitcoin Pizza Day continues to be one of the most prominent dates on the cryptocurrency calendar – read on to find out why.

Bitcoin Pizza Day entered crypto-folklore ever since programmer Laszlo Hanyecz decided that the first purchase with the revolutionary new financial technology, bitcoin, would be pizza. On May 22, 2010, via the bitcoin forum BitcoinTalk, Låszló arranged for another forum member to order two pizzas from Papa John's and Låszló would pay 10,000 BTC to cover the cost. The pizza was delivered to Laszlo's address, and the first bitcoin transaction was recorded in history.

Taking into account the price of BTC at the time of writing, Laszlo paid over $595,000,000, which in retrospect is the most expensive pizza ever purchased.

Bitcoin Pizza Day is an important event because it is the first time that real products have been bought with cryptocurrency. Since then, the industry has blossomed with thousands of different projects and cryptocurrencies using blockchain to revolutionize all aspects of culture, including fashion, art, music, real estate, telecommunications and more, but it all started with a whitepaper and two pizzas.
