OpenAI will train its AI model on content from the social media platform Reddit, the two companies jointly announced on Thursday. Reddit bills itself as “an important space for internet conversations” and says the deal will expand the scope of material in OpenAI's large language model (LLM), while also helping to improve the experience. user experience.
“This collaboration will also enable Reddit to bring new AI-powered features to Reddit users and moderators,” the company explains, while OpenAI will “better understand and present the content of Reddit, especially on recent topics.”
Following the announcement, shares of Reddit (RDDT) rose more than 14% in after-hours trading. The company's shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on March 21.

In a footnote to its blog post about the deal, OpenAI noted that its CEO, Sam Altman, is a Reddit shareholder. The AI giant also noted that the deal was led by Brad Lightcap, OpenAI's chief operating officer, and approved by the company's independent board of directors.
“Reddit has become one of the internet's largest open repositories of authentic, relevant, and up-to-date human conversations about just about everything,” said Steve Huffman, co-founder and CEO of Reddit, said in a statement. “Including it in ChatGPT supports our belief in a connected internet, helping people find more of what they are looking for, and helping new audiences find community on Reddit.”
According to Reddit, OpenAI will integrate Reddit's content into ChatGPT and other unnamed products using Reddit's Data API. This partnership will also enable Reddit to develop new AI features using OpenAI's technology, and meanwhile, OpenAI will become Reddit's advertising partner.
“We are excited to partner with Reddit to enhance ChatGPT with exceptionally timely and relevant information, and explore the possibilities to enrich the Reddit experience with AI-powered features,” Lightcap said in a statement.
The deal between OpenAI and Reddit comes the same week that both OpenAI and Google made several high-profile announcements about their AI tools.
On Monday, OpenAI released updates to ChatGPT, including a new and faster model called GPT-4o. On Tuesday, during its annual Google I/O event, Google introduced several new AI-powered features under its Gemini brand, including expansions to its suite of productivity tools. .
OpenAI's deal isn't the first where Reddit has leveraged its vast library of discussions and debates. In February, Reddit signed a deal with rival AI developer Google, giving the tech giant access to its vast content library. This partnership subsequently triggered an investigation by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Reddit revealed the following month.
“The FTC staff is conducting a nonpublic investigation focused on our sale, licensing, or sharing of user-generated content with third parties to train AI models,” Reddit stated in profile. “We do not believe that we have engaged in any unfair or deceptive trade practices.”
News of the deal between OpenAI and Reddit did not go down well with many on social media, with many commenters criticizing the site's controversial and provocative communities.
“Reddit's collective intelligence is a bunch of basement-dwelling, unemployed, anti-social people,” Trustswap CEO Jeff Kirdeikis wrote on Twitter. “If you think that OpenAI was prejudiced in the past…”
“Glad to know that search will have a Reddit filter,” said Technology Educator Paul Couvert.
“Disinformation and prejudice are rife,” says writer and entrepreneur Che Rodney. “This is a disaster waiting to happen.”
