What are the synergies between Linea and ConsenSys’ other product lines?

Guest: Big Pie Brother

The purpose of Consensys is to allow more people to enter the world of blockchain. But the biggest problem now is that the fees on the chain are too expensive.

Previously, Consensys' service method was only MetaMask and an rpc node. But now with the Linea protocol, we can bring the best user experience to new users.

Users can quickly go to the second-layer protocol through MetaMask, and then directly purchase the virtual assets they want in the cheapest and most convenient way.

Therefore, with Linea, a convenient and easy-to-use underlying protocol, we can provide a better user experience. The user experience of Web3 will become more and more like Web2, which is the only way we think to attract people who are not interested in Web3 projects.

In order to make the entire product simple and good, Linea is a great boost for our company.

Linea also belongs to the category of Zkevm. Previously, Vitalik divided Zkevm into four categories. Which category does Linea belong to? And why do you plan to take this path?

Guest: Big Pancake Brother

There are actually two major types of Rollups on the market. One is Optimism Rollup such as ARB and OP, and the second is Zk Rollup mainly based on Linea. Optimism Rollup has several important defects. It cannot be converted to the main network immediately, and the transition from the main network to the second layer is not smooth enough.

The second is security. The second-layer protocol actually allows the computing power that cannot be deposited on the main network to move to the second layer, and then put it back to the first layer after calculation.

Zk Rollup uses zero-knowledge proof, and Optimism Rollup uses fraud proof. Zero-knowledge proof is 100% secure, which is why Vitalik Buterin said that the first step to expand Ethereum is Optimism Rollup, but its final form must be zk Rollup.

Second, there are huge differences between different Zkevms. For example, between ZkSync and Linea, ZkSync is not EVM-compatible at the bytecode level.

If you have a Dapp on the mainnet, you can put it directly on Linea without any code changes and convert it to Linea's second-layer protocol with one click. However, if you want to switch to ZkSync, you need a compiler, which is an extra step. There will be security issues and some additional costs in development.

So Linea is a Type 2 Zkevm, zksync is a Type 3 or Type 4 ZKevm, and there is also an EVM like Stark, which are not Ethereum's VMs. They have their own VMs and their own languages, so they are not very friendly to developers.

Of course, everyone has a different interpretation of Zkevm. The more Zkevms there are, the more layer 2 protocols there are. Only after fierce competition can we know whose technology is the strongest.

In addition to allowing developers to avoid migrating these projects to the second layer and developing them using Solidity, which is familiar to developers, what other advantages does Linea have?

Guest: Big Pancake Brother

Everyone may have their own advantages. From Linea's perspective, the biggest technical advantage is the use of a proof system called Lettuce, which is like peeling a layer of lettuce. This proof system uses a faster process to generate Snark Proof.

The second point is actually a prospect for Ethereum’s second-layer protocol. Linea has never thought of dominating the second-layer protocol, and we really want to do Multi Prover.

Multi Prover is to imagine Linea as the client of Ethereum. There are many different clients now. Only after having multiple clients can the security of Ethereum be guaranteed, because if one client fails, there are still many others that can be used.

It is actually problematic for Ethereum's second layer to be dominated by one company, because if a bug occurs after a monopoly, it will affect the entire ecosystem.

Multi Prover means that you can have three parties certify your product. If all three parties pass, it can be verified and put back on the main network, which greatly enhances the security of Ethereum. This is also what we think is the use of Linea as a second-layer protocol.

As for Consensys, we mainly want to promote Multi Prover, which is very consistent with the entire Ethereum or the direction of Ethereum we imagine in the future. This is also a big technical challenge.

Is Linea worried that companies like ARB and OP will take up such market share early on because of their first-mover advantage?

Guest: Big Pancake Brother

I don’t think they have a first-mover advantage, but I think they have made outstanding contributions to the entire second-layer protocol or Ethereum expansion ecosystem, which is to prove that the second layer can indeed be used. For a long time, everyone felt that there was no need for a second layer, and more people might use BNB or Polygon.

ARB and OP have set a good example, but after they set a precedent, can they be sure that they will win? Ethereum has been around for so many years since 2016, with layer upon layer of new narratives and new technologies. No one can be said to be the only one that can dominate or whose network effect has reached a certain level that others cannot catch up.

Secondly, I think a company like Linea has a natural technological advantage, and the natural combination with Consensys and Little Fox, combining these concentrated factors together, Linea is very confident in competing or cooperating with friendly companies.

The last point is that Consensys has a strong cooperative relationship with OP and ARB, so it is not like what the outside world imagines that when a new second-layer protocol comes, the previous ones will die or there will be serious competition.

Linea is working diligently every day to develop in the direction of Multi Prover, Layer 3, security performance, and simplicity for more users.

For example, Linea now already has a native account abstraction, which is 4337, so everyone can do Sponsor Transaction, Section Key, etc., so I don’t think the competition is as fierce as everyone imagines.

If some unexpected failures occur, how can we ensure the safety of users' funds on Linea?

Guest: Big Pancake Brother

In fact, this problem can be divided into two small problems. In fact, the loss of funds is one problem. The second problem is the security performance of our products. Let me talk about security first. Downtime and capital loss are completely two different problems. Downtime does not mean that your money is gone.

So you don’t have to worry about the security of the Linea network. The reason we are doing Odyssey on the test network with Galaxy is that we want everyone to use our test network and undergo stress testing to see if our network can hold up. At least it looks very good at the moment.

Consensys has been working on Ethereum infrastructure since 2016. Perhaps no company in the cryptocurrency ecosystem has done a better job than Consensys in infrastructure. So please rest assured that downtime may occur, but it will definitely be solved immediately because Consensys has a lot of experience in dealing with downtime.

Regarding the loss of funds, from a business perspective, we hope that there will be good projects on Linea, and that everyone can rush to pursue projects that can make money. Then we hope that there will be a good cycle. The more good projects there are, the more money everyone can make. We have some basic businesses on it, and I think the most important thing is that everyone can make money on Linea.

I wonder if there is any positioning for the NFTs given out on the test network now. Will it be related to the retroactive airdrops in the future?

Guest: Big Pancake Brother

I can honestly tell you that we ourselves don’t know because the supervision is so strict now.

Our current approach to NFT is to give a stamp to those who sincerely want to use our products, but what can we do next and how can we give back to the community? We are thinking about how to give back to the community every day.

So I think if you really want to participate in the construction of the Linea ecosystem, especially since I think the Linea ecosystem has many natural advantages over other ecosystems, I strongly recommend that you come to Linea to do a project, give us suggestions, and really join our community. I think this will give you very unexpected benefits.

Host Jesse

What suggestions do you have for developers who want to participate in the overall Linea ecosystem?

Guest: Big Pancake Brother

I divide developers into several categories. The first category is those who already have their own product and want to consider cross-chain or multi-chain. It is very easy and smooth on Linea, and Linea can also help promote the project.

The second category may be those who want to do some projects on their own but can't find the direction. Linea also welcomes them very much, because Linea will set up an incubator and accelerator in the next few months to help entrepreneurs find investment. Therefore, developers are very welcome to develop new projects on Linea.

The third category is newbies who may not know anything. I can recommend some courses for you to learn. I think all kinds of developers can actually win-win in our Consensys ecosystem.

So no matter which category you belong to, you can actually do a lot of different tests on Linea. Whether you are working on a new project or cross-chain, or just learning, Linea is very welcome.

Host Jesse

What is Linea’s roadmap? Can you share with us any important plans for this year?

Guest: Big Pancake Brother

The mainnet will be launched in July. Linea's development team is working very hard every day to give everyone a better experience when the mainnet is launched, so we would like to invite fellow developers to participate.

After the mainnet is launched, there will probably be two directions. The first thing Linea wants to do is about Layer3 and Appchain.

So far, Linea has contacted many game-type project parties. Games actually have higher requirements for throughput, and especially game publishers, they need point-to-point and own the entire value chain, so Layer3 is Linea's project direction.

The second is that more manpower needs to be invested in Multi Prover, because Multi Prover requires cooperation with other companies, but other companies are not highly dependent on Ethereum, so Consensys itself needs to put in more effort to do it.

The last point I want to make is that as an ecological public chain, Linea’s development direction needs to be told by the community. I think it is not possible to build a good ecosystem if we work in isolation and do not discuss with the community what the community needs.

Host Jesse

Is Linea’s current focus still on DeFi, or does it also want to introduce some Web3 projects with stronger social attributes?

Guest: Big Pancake Brother

Lenster is now in Linea's ecosystem, and we are very embracing it. Social and many Gamefi projects are also tracks that Linea is deeply involved in. But the biggest problem now is that social networks require network computing and have a cold start problem, which is difficult to achieve on the second-layer protocol.

So we want to do Defi first, and then do some small Gamefi. Linea hopes that users can experience our platform and Network first, lay a solid foundation, and then hope that good social software will come to develop.

Co-host Teddy

Are these projects done on Linea with Layer3 or directly on Linea?

Guest: Big Pancake Brother

Currently, we are working directly on Linea, so we hope to develop Layer3 in the second half of the year, which will be more convenient. However, like Social Network, not everything needs to be on the chain. So we also want to challenge entrepreneurs, not everything needs to be on the chain.
