Brazilian authorities may soon lift the ban on Elon Musk’s social platform X, after the company paid a fine of 28.6 million Brazilian reals (about $5.5 million), Cointelegraph reported.

Local media reported that on October 7, X met the latest requirements to be restored online. In late August, Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court suspended X’s services for failing to comply with an order related to an investigation into the spread of false information.

The fine was mistakenly deposited into the wrong account on October 4 and later transferred to the correct account by Musk’s satellite company Starlink. The fine includes the original fine for X’s failure to cooperate with the court investigation and an additional fine of 10 million Brazilian reais (about $1.9 million).

X also appointed new legal representatives and blocked the accounts of users accused of spreading false information. Whether the platform can be restored depends on the recommendation of Brazil's Attorney General, and if approved, Judge Moraes will review and decide again.

Moraes has been investigating X for allegedly spreading false information in Brazil since 2023, and Musk is also under investigation for charges including obstruction of justice, participation in a criminal organization, and incitement to commit a crime. Musk has publicly criticized Moraes' actions, calling it politically motivated censorship.
