According to Cointelegraph, Illyriad Games co-founder Ben Adams proposed EIP-7781 on October 5, aiming to reduce the Ethereum block time from 12 seconds to 8 seconds and increase data capacity to increase overall throughput by 50%.

Justin Drake, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, expressed support for the proposal on GitHub, saying it is consistent with the goals of Vitalik Buterin and the Ethereum Scaling Organization. Shortening block times will make decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap v3 more efficient and save about $100 million in CEX-DEX arbitrage costs.

However, shortening block times could pose risks to independent stakers, increasing hardware and bandwidth requirements. Adam Cochran, partner at Cinnehaim Ventures, said the proposal’s impact on independent stakers is within an acceptable range, but further testing is needed.

The proposal comes three days after Buterin discussed lowering the minimum requirement to become an Ethereum validator from 36 ETH to 16 or 24 ETH in a bid to improve network security and decentralization.
