According to Cointelegraph, on September 20, a group of mysterious developers announced a hard fork of the Samourai Wallet code and released the first mobile wallet version of the Ashigaru Open Source Project based on the code.

The Ashigaru project website states that it develops, publishes and maintains free and open source software, and is committed to developing low-tech solutions that ensure user security, privacy and censorship resistance.

Developers say the project makes extensive use of code from the public domain and other crypto projects, emphasizing that anyone should be able to conduct peaceful, voluntary, and private Internet transactions without tracking, surveillance, or censorship.

The development team claims to be former users of Samourai Wallet, but has nothing to do with the Samourai Wallet core development team.

In April 2024, Samourai Wallet founder Keonne Rodriguez and William Hill were arrested by the U.S. Department of Justice on money laundering charges, suspected of executing more than $2 billion in illegal transactions and more than $100 million in money laundering transactions.
