According to Cointelegraph, executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft met at the White House on September 12 to discuss building a robust energy infrastructure for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing needs.
Representatives such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei pointed out that the United States' aging energy infrastructure cannot meet the huge energy needs of the emerging artificial intelligence industry.
Goldman Sachs estimates that AI will drive a 160% increase in data center electricity demand by 2030. An OpenAI spokesperson said that building AI-grade energy infrastructure will create a large number of jobs in the United States.
OpenAI also claims that this will help with the geographic decentralization of AI and ensure the United States remains at the forefront of innovation.
Executives at the meeting also explained that failing to strengthen current energy infrastructure and falling behind in the AI âârace will pose a national security risk to the United States.
Sabre56 CEO Phil Harvey said that AI data centers cost between $3 million and $5 million per megawatt to operate. The International Energy Agency report also confirmed that a typical ChatGPT search consumes 10 times the energy of a standard Google search.
Indiana lawmakers pledged to provide companies like Google, Meta and Microsoft with sufficient uninterrupted energy to support data center operations, and state Commerce Secretary David Rosenberg stressed that the state has sufficient energy and water resources to meet industry needs.
The stateâs abundant natural resources have prompted big tech companies to invest $14 billion in data center facilities to support powerful artificial intelligence and high-performance computing operations.
