Juan Tacuri, a top promoter of the Forcount cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme, has pleaded guilty to his role in the scam, which defrauded Spanish-speaking investors worldwide of a total of $8.4 million, CoinDesk reported. Tacuri, a 46-year-old Florida resident, pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud conspiracy in the Southern District of New York, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Tacuri also agreed to return nearly $4 million to victims and to purchase real estate with victims' funds as part of his plea agreement. Prosecutors said Tacuri and other promoters promised investors that their investments in Forcount would double within six months, but in reality, Forcount never conducted any mining or trading, and Tacuri and his accomplices simply used the money of new investors to repay early investors and splurge on luxury goods and real estate. Tacuri is scheduled to be sentenced by District Judge Analisa Torres in New York on September 24.
