According to The Verge, multiple people familiar with the matter revealed that the OpenAI board of directors is discussing with Sam Altman about returning to the company as CEO. A source close to Altman said that the board agreed in principle to resign and allow Sam Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman to return.
OpenAI’s current board of directors is made up of chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, former GeoSim Systems CEO Tasha McCauley, and Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology strategic director Helen Toner. None of them holds equity in OpenAI.
Ilya Sutskever, who also co-founded OpenAI and held leadership responsibilities, played a key role in removing Altman, according to multiple sources, and his role in the coup is indicative of a power struggle between the company’s research and product divisions.
