Oklahoma State Senator Dusty Deevers has introduced the Bitcoin Freedom Act, which would allow workers in the state to receive their salaries in Bitcoin. The bill, SB 1465, was introduced on February 6, 2023, and is currently in the Senate Business and Commerce Committee. If passed, the bill would make Oklahoma the first state in the US to allow workers to receive their salaries in Bitcoin. The bill defines Bitcoin as "a decentralized digital currency, without a central bank or single administrator, that can be sent from user to user on the peer-to-peer bitcoin network without the need for intermediaries." The bill would also allow employers to offer Bitcoin as a retirement savings option. The bill defines a "qualified retirement plan" as "any plan, account, or arrangement described in section 401(a), 403(a), 408, or 457 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986." The bill is supported by the Oklahoma Blockchain Task Force, a group of industry leaders and policymakers working to promote the development of blockchain technology in the state.
