OpenAI CEO: The long-term goal is to pursue superintelligent AI

Sam Altman, CEO of the AI startup OpenAI, recently published a new blog article 'Reflections', stating that the first AI agents will enter the workplace within this year and have a significant impact on corporate productivity.

Foreign media analysis defines so-called AI agents (Agentic AI or AI Agents) as AI systems with autonomous decision-making capabilities and goal-oriented behavior. They can autonomously understand complex goals, make decisions, execute tasks with minimal human intervention, and complete multi-step reasoning processes.

Additionally, Altman confidently stated that OpenAI has the capability to design and create Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). AGI refers to AI systems that possess human-like intelligence and can perform various tasks across different domains, not limited to specific functions or application scenarios.

Altman explained in the article that he is aiming for a more distant future, pursuing 'true superintelligence'.

'We love the current products of OpenAI, but our goal is to embrace a brilliant future. Through superintelligent AI, we can achieve anything else possible. This tool can accelerate scientific development and innovation, far exceeding the limits of our human capabilities, further enhancing wealth and prosperity,' Altman wrote.

💡 Superintelligence: Possessing cognitive abilities and intelligence far exceeding those of humans, with the ability to self-learn and self-modify. Due to its potential profound impacts on society, economy, and ethics, safety and control are critical considerations in the development of superintelligence.

Is the rapid development of AI a blessing or a curse?

Even though AGI or super AI is seen as an important technological advancement, Forbes pointed out that such AI developments have simultaneously raised concerns across various sectors.

Geoff Hinton, who is often referred to as the 'father of AI', has publicly warned about the current AI research, believing that powerful AI has the capability to surpass humans in ways that do not align with humanity's best interests. Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, and Rachel Bronson, CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, among others, have called for a pause on 'large-scale AI experiments'.

However, Professor Roman Yampolskiy from the University of Louisville believes that, in a narrow sense, humanity already possesses AGI. He explained that the GPT-4 model has outperformed humans in many fields.

'It can write poetry, create art, play games,' Yampolskiy stated in a podcast interview, noting that even very talented humans may not be able to compete with this model in all fields, as GPT-4 has already taken a dominant position in versatility.
