Odaily Planet Daily News Vitalik Buterin published a new long article "d/acc: one year later," providing new insights on the d/acc (decentralized acceleration) concept and ideas proposed last year, focusing on the core ideas of d/acc (decentralization, differentiated defense acceleration for democracy) and covering principles, AI safety regulation, the role of cryptocurrency in d/acc, and public goods funding. Vitalik proposed two major strategies for AI safety: first, establishing accountability, with main goals including users (those using AI), deployers (intermediaries providing AI services to users), and developers (those building AI); second, setting up a global "soft pause" mechanism at the industrial-grade hardware level, which can reduce global computing power by about 90-99% for 1-2 years during critical times, giving humanity more time to prepare. He added that accountability rules are a naturally d/acc-friendly regulatory approach. The article also points out some important connections between cryptocurrency and d/acc, specifically: - d/acc is the extension of the underlying values of cryptocurrency (decentralization, resistance to censorship, open global economy and society) into other technological fields; - since crypto users are natural early adopters and share consistent values, the crypto community is a natural early user of d/acc technology; - many crypto technologies can be used in the thematic areas of d/acc: blockchain for building stronger and decentralized financial, governance, and social media infrastructure, zero-knowledge proofs for privacy protection, etc.; - there are also win-win opportunities in crypto-related technologies that are very useful for crypto projects but are also key to achieving d/acc goals: formal verification, computer software and hardware security, and highly adversarial governance technologies; - beyond these direct intersections, there is another important point of common interest: funding mechanisms. The article also mentions innovative mechanisms including quadratic funding, retroactive public goods funding, and deep funding, emphasizing that decentralized funding is crucial for the d/acc vision. It believes that in the coming decades, significant challenges will arise, and has recently been contemplating the following two challenges: - A powerful wave of new technologies, especially strong artificial intelligence, is rapidly emerging, accompanied by significant traps we need to avoid. "Superintelligent AI" could take five years to achieve or even fifty years. In any case, it is currently unclear whether the default outcomes will necessarily be positive, as there are multiple traps to avoid; - The world is becoming increasingly devoid of cooperation. Many powerful actors in the past seemed to act according to noble principles (universalism, freedom, common humanity, etc.) at least some of the time, but now they are more openly and actively pursuing personal or tribal interests. However, there is hope in facing these challenges. First, we now have very powerful tools to complete the remaining work faster, including: Currently and in the near future, AI can be used to build other technologies and can serve as a component of governance (such as deep funding or information finance). It is also highly relevant to BCI, which can further enhance productivity. Large-scale coordination can now be done on a larger scale than before. The internet and social media have expanded the scope of coordination, and global finance (including cryptocurrency) has enhanced its power, while now information defense and collaboration tools can improve its quality, and perhaps soon human-to-human forms of BCI can increase its depth. Formal verification, sandboxes (web browsers, Docker, Qubes, GrapheneOS, etc.), secure hardware modules, and other technologies are continuously improving, making better cybersecurity possible. Secondly, since many of the principles we cherish are no longer occupied by a few specific conservatives, they can be reclaimed by a broad alliance that anyone in the world can join. Cryptocurrency has leveraged this well and gained global appeal; d/acc can do this too.
