NFTs solidified their place as a cornerstone of crypto innovation in 2024, driven by record-breaking minting activity and growing use cases.
The new year promises to push the boundaries of NFTs to the extreme as real-world applications drive mainstream adoption and cultural breakthroughs redefine the concept of ownership, and as momentum builds on all fronts, the space will achieve even greater things in 2025!
From infrastructure improvements to skyrocketing prices, here are five bold predictions I believe will define the next chapter of the NFT revolution. 👇
📈 New casting record
According to Electric Capital’s annual developer report, this year has been the most active so far in the NFT space.
Thanks to low transaction fees on Ethereum’s Layer 2 solutions and growing competition from alternative Layer 1 solutions, creators are launching more NFT contracts than ever before and are seeing equally strong demand: minting, trading volume, and the number of active minting wallets all reached all-time highs in 2024.
Looking ahead to 2025, the crypto space should prepare for another wave of innovation and activity in NFTs. Renewed interest from creators and consumers, coupled with improved user experience and groundbreaking consumer-facing applications, should lay the foundation for unprecedented growth.
We’ll be keeping an eye on new developments in the Abstract ecosystem and the continued rise of on-chain proxies like those from Virtuals and Wayfinder as the frontier of NFT adoption.
🚂 Infrastructure attractiveness
While NFTs are most easily associated with image-infested on-chain collectibles, we expect less obvious NFT use cases to see the most adoption in 2025.
Stablecoin issuer Liquity recently integrated NFTs for V2, enabling users to transfer or trade their collateralized debt positions, Polymarket’s conditional NFTs facilitate the creation of betting markets, while emerging AI agent creation platform Virtuals uses NFTs in its Immutable Contribution Vault (ICV) system to track contributions.
NFTs will continue to be a convenient form of distribution for artists, but we hope that this transformative technology will play a greater role in real-world on-chain applications.
🎮 The Cambrian Gaming Explosion
In October, Starknet worked with Cartridge’s on-chain gaming masters to stress-test their L2, setting a new L2 speed record in the process! During the trial, Starknet’s average fees were just $0.002 per transaction, and it was able to process up to 867 transactions per second.
The rise of account abstraction has greatly improved the user experience for crypto newcomers, and while crypto gaming has yet to be adopted at scale by mainstream laggards, the space has given players in-game item ownership and introduced token incentives, allowing it to tap into new demographics and promote financial participation.
As blockchain infrastructure continues to improve through 2025, we expect the growing popularity of on-chain gaming to enable L2 to reach +1k TPS for the first time in history.
