German officials have ordered the World Foundation, the governing body of the Worldcoin project (recently renamed World), to delete illegally collected biometric data of project participants. This order is the result of an investigation that the office conducted into the practices that Worldcoin engaged in with this information.
Interestingly, the office in question is not one of the authorities of the Federal Republic. It is the Bavarian State Office for Personal Data Protection (Bayerisches Landesamt für Datenschutzaufsicht). In theory, that is, a "local" body - whose order will, however, have much broader significance than just local ones.
Bavarian officials have opened proceedings in the World Foundation case based on European data protection regulations (see GDPR). And from this procedure they drew a clear conclusion – Worldcoin treated these regulations with a far-reaching nonchalance.
As we know, this project became famous for its somewhat dystopian-looking retinal scanning balls. Exhibited in public places in many countries, they allowed anyone to obtain a free volume of the eponymous cryptocurrency – in exchange for “sharing” (selling?) their biometric data.
