Over the past 30 days, I tried something new: every night, I invested $1 in a different cryptocurrency. It wasn’t a lot, but it gave me a fresh perspective on crypto investing. By the end of the month, I had bought 30 different cryptocurrencies, but I didn’t expect how much the value of my portfolio would fluctuate, especially as I added more coins. I thought diversifying would protect me, but I quickly realized it led to a lot of volatility. Here’s what I learned:
The Risks of Over-Diversification
Initially, I thought diversifying my investments across many coins would be a smart strategy. After all, diversification is key in traditional investing. But soon, I saw that it didn’t work as expected. Some coins were stable, while others experienced huge value swings. Every time I added a new coin, my overall portfolio seemed to dip. The lesson: not all coins are created equal, and volatility in crypto can cancel out the benefits of diversification.
The Three-Portfolios Strategy
From this experiment, I learned that a more structured approach could’ve worked better. Instead of buying random coins, I could’ve created three separate portfolios, each with a specific purpose:
1. Stable Portfolio 💵: This would include stablecoins like USDT, USDC, or DAI, offering stability and preservation of value.
2. High-Risk, High-Reward Portfolio 🚀: Focused on coins with high growth potential but also a lot of volatility. These are for risk-takers who want big returns, despite the ups and downs.
3. Balanced Portfolio ⚖️: A mix of stablecoins and more volatile assets to manage risk while still positioning for growth.
Risk Management in Crypto
Risk management is vital. It's not just about how much you invest, but how you balance it across different assets. I realized that each coin has its own risk level, which can change over time.
Risk Management Equation:
Risk = (Potential Volatility) x (Amount Invested)
The more volatile a coin is, the higher the risk. By balancing stablecoins and speculative assets, you can reduce risks while still aiming for high rewards.
A Smarter Way to Invest in Crypto
Looking back, I see the value of having a more structured portfolio. By splitting investments into three distinct portfolios based on risk and stability, I could’ve managed my crypto journey better. It’s important to understand the coins you're investing in, not just the amount you’re putting in. Balancing risk across various assets and staying informed is the best strategy.
