Montenegrin Justice Minister Bojan Božović has issued a decision allowing the extradition of Kwon Do Hyeong to the United States of America (USA).
The decision follows Montenegro's Supreme Court ruling that extradition requests from South Korea and the United States met legal requirements.
The Montenegrin Supreme Court ruled that the extradition requests for Kwon Do Hyeong made by both South Korea and the US were legally valid. Following this decision, the Ministry of Justice evaluated all the details and criteria for extradition.
The criteria taken into account during the evaluation process included the severity of the crimes, the place where the crime was committed, the order of the requests, the citizenship of the wanted person, the possibility of extradition to another country and similar factors.
US request given priority
The Justice Ministry said in a statement, “Considering the criteria set forth, it has been concluded that most of the criteria stipulated in the legal regulations support the United States’ request for extradition.” Accordingly, the Justice Ministry issued a decision allowing the extradition of Kwon Do Hyeong to the United States, while rejecting South Korea’s request for extradition.
Kwon Do Hyeong is known in the crypto world as the co-founder of Terraform Labs, which was involved in a major financial scandal due to its Luna and TerraUSD projects, which collapsed in 2022, causing $40 billion to be wiped out of the market.
