Africa is becoming a global focus as crypto miners seek new locations with cheap energy and friendly regulation as China bans cryptocurrencies. Ethiopia's newly commissioned Grand Renaissance Dam has brought huge power generation capacity to the country, and its electricity sales to the crypto mining sector have also been unexpectedly successful. The Ethiopian Electric Power Company said that 18% of its monthly sales now come from Bitcoin mining, accounting for more than half of Ethiopia's total electricity exports to neighboring countries, compared with almost zero last year. Power companies such as Gridless are using Bitcoin mining to fund and maintain microgrids to provide cheap electricity to rural areas in Kenya, Malawi and Zambia. In addition, other countries in Africa are also using crypto mining to advance energy infrastructure. (The Africa Report)
