Elon Musk's AI startup xAI announced the completion of its Series C funding on December 23, raising an impressive $6 billion, attracting several large institutions and strategic partners, including prominent venture capital firms and tech giants like a16z, BlackRock, NVIDIA, and AMD.

Support from global venture capital and tech giants

xAI stated that this funding round involved several top investment institutions, including a16z (Andreessen Horowitz), BlackRock, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Kingdom Holdings, Sequoia Capital, Lightspeed, Morgan Stanley, as well as strategic partners like NVIDIA and AMD.

xAI stated that the $6 billion raised in this funding will be used to expand infrastructure, enhance the scale and performance of the supercomputer Colossus, accelerate AI product development, and create AI systems beneficial to humanity.

From the supercomputer Colossus to multimodal AI models

Since the Series B funding, xAI has made significant strides in technology and infrastructure, currently working on training the new version of the large language model Grok 3. Below are the highlighted products currently launched by xAI:

  1. Supercomputer Colossus: Equipped with 100,000 NVIDIA Hopper GPUs, it was delivered to Musk in just 122 days and is now fully operational. Plans to further expand to 200,000 GPUs in the future.

  2. Grok 2 large language model: Launched a language model with cutting-edge reasoning capabilities, enhancing the understanding and generation abilities of multimodal AI models.

  3. xAI API: Open application programming interface (API), with main functions including text generation, code generation, visual processing, and integration with external systems.

  4. Aurora image generation model: Recently released briefly, mainly enhancing the understanding, editing, and generation capabilities of multimodal AI, bringing more possibilities for application development, but is currently taken down.
