On the night of December 13, 2024, the Soviet Union launched a massive attack on Ukraine using more than 90 missiles and about 100 drones. The main targets were critical infrastructure and residential areas in many regions. Kyiv, Odesa, Lviv and other regions were the most affected. Thanks to the work of Ukrainian air defense, most of the targets were shot down, but some missiles and fragments caused significant damage.
Main consequences:
1. Kyiv:
The attack injured 51 people, including 6 children. Residential buildings, cars, and some energy infrastructure were damaged. Fires broke out in several areas of the capital due to falling debris from downed missiles.
2. Other regions:
Six private homes and critical infrastructure were damaged in the Odessa region. Energy facilities were attacked in the Lviv and Rivne regions, causing large-scale power outages.
3. Power system:
Emergency power outages have been imposed in many regions due to damage to energy facilities. Ukrenergo and local authorities have deployed "points of invincibility" to assist the population.
Impact on the crypto market:
The large-scale attack affected the perception of risk among investors, which is traditionally reflected in highly volatile markets such as cryptocurrency. In previous cases, such attacks have caused both an increase in interest in cryptocurrencies due to distrust in traditional financial systems, and a decrease in activity in local markets due to power and internet outages.
Ukrainian energy professionals and services are working quickly to restore the damaged infrastructure, but the threat of new attacks remains high.
