OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed confidence on Sunday that the administration of US President-elect Donald Trump will support the artificial intelligence sector to ensure that the United States and its allies continue to lead in it.
Speaking to Fox News, Altman said that AI technology needs massive infrastructure support, and he believes Trump will be “good at providing it.”
"We need to build that here, and we need to be able to have the best AI infrastructure in the world so that we can lead with technology and capabilities," he said, according to Agence France-Presse.
"I think President-elect Trump will be very good at that," he added.
Altman was responding to a question about the US-China competition in AI, adding, “We believe very strongly that the US and our allies need to lead on this.”
The infrastructure required for AI technology includes massive amounts of electricity, large data centers, and technological support in the form of access to advanced semiconductors and computer chips.
Altman also said the US Congress needs to pass legislation that puts safeguards in place for the use of AI.
“I think it should be a question for the community, like, OpenAI shouldn’t have the right to decide on its own how to use ChatGPT or how to use technology in general or not use it,” he added.
OpenAI has seen a tremendous rise in its profile over recent years, becoming a star player in the growing field of artificial intelligence.
Billionaire Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but has since left, has asked a U.S. court to block the company from turning into a for-profit organization, U.S. media reported Saturday.#
