Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has become a billionaire, Forbes reported on Monday.
Altman entered Forbes' list of the world's billionaires at number 2,692, noting that his wealth came mainly from his investments in startups, such as Reddit, which recently went public on the New York Stock Exchange, and the payments company Stripe, which is currently valued at about $65 billion.
Altman became the face of the global AI craze when his company launched ChatGPT in 2022, and he has invested in more recent ventures, including nuclear energy company Helion and startup Retro Biosciences.
His wealth, which includes prime real estate in California and Hawaii, was estimated using public disclosures and investigative reports, Forbes said.
Altman has insisted that he owns no shares in OpenAI, the company that made him a near-household name and is valued at about $80 billion.
OpenAI recently announced that its co-founder and CEO Sam Altman will return to its board of directors.
Altman's return comes in what is part of a game of musical chairs after an independent investigation found that the board did not need to fire him in the first place. Altman was ousted as CEO and managing director in November, in one of the most high-profile dismissals in Silicon Valley.
