There are rumors that the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) are exploring the use of Ripple’s cryptocurrency XRP as part of an alternative payment system. This is in line with the bloc’s growing interest in challenging the US dollar’s hegemony and creating a more efficient and independent payment system using technologies such as blockchain.
Brazil recently recognized XRP as a legitimate digital asset, which could boost the use of this cryptocurrency in Latin America. In addition, Russia has collaborated with Ripple on central bank digital currency (CBDC) initiatives, reinforcing XRP’s role as a viable solution for international payments.
However, despite discussions and partnerships, there is still no official movement towards the adoption of XRP by the BRICS as a whole. Some countries within the bloc, such as Russia, have shown a greater focus on the use of Bitcoin for cross-border payments.
Therefore, although XRP has gained relevance in the region, its integration into the BRICS payment systems is still uncertain, with more progress possible in the coming years.
