The Ethereum ecosystem has recently reversed, but controversy has erupted within the community. Former team members of the zkRollup project Scroll clashed with the co-founder of Movement Labs, which had just finished its testnet and announced an airdrop. Scroll accused Movement of code plagiarism, while Movement countered that Scroll's behavior was inappropriate, which damaged the reputation of the Layer 2 ecosystem.

The controversy stems from a comment in which Movement co-founder Rushi Manche criticized the Scroll team for defending useless terminology, implying that it was not in line with the interests of Ethereum. The war of words has not yet received an official response from Scroll.

Toghrul, a former member of the Scroll team, directly hit back at Rushi, accusing him of ironic remarks. He believes that "postconfirmations" is just a renamed "preconfirmations", and the Movement team's self-proclaimed "fast finality Rollup" is contradictory, and it is unclear whether it is an optimistic Rollup or a side chain. He also mentioned that the Movement code base is almost copied from Aptos, with minor changes, but it cannot handle basic EVM support.

Rushi did not hold back, listing various problems of Scroll, including launching predatory incentive plans, selling secondary market share, airdrop allocation cashing out, etc. He bluntly stated that Scroll's product was the worst, causing the EVM L2 ecosystem to be full of resentment towards it, and criticized the Scroll team's behavior for making it look like a scam.

He added, “I have respect for some members of your team, but Scroll and you are arguably one of the worst players in this field (even at least 6 of your colleagues - half of whom have left - came to apologize to me and expressed regret for your behavior).”

“In the past two months, a quarter of your team has applied for our positions. There are a lot of people I really like over there, so I feel a little bad about that, but please don’t use the word condescending to describe me, haha.”

Rushi ended by saying, “I am actively searching for ‘Scroll scam’ and learning more about it. @toghrulmaharram don’t bother me, haha.”

Scroll has been controversial recently

Earlier this year, Starknet sparked controversy over the "electronic beggar" incident. Scroll's Toghrul Maharramov also made a similar mistake, calling the other party an "electronic beggar" and using vulgar words to mock the user. When interacting with the community, Scroll frequently encountered negative comments.

In September, Scroll co-founder Sandy Peng became an advisor to the Trump family's crypto project, further exacerbating doubts about his circle of connections. In October, Scroll became Binance's first pre-market trading project and announced its token economics, but the community criticized the low airdrop quota and the high Binance Launchpool quota, believing that this was an act of showing goodwill to Binance.

In Scroll's token distribution, airdrops accounted for only 15%, but Binance Launchpool's distribution accounted for a higher proportion, and the initial circulation far exceeded the airdrop. This design deepened the community's doubts about token economics, believing that large institutions hold too much tokens and the interests of the community are compressed. The project's logo and management methods were also ridiculed by the community, and in the debate with Rushi, Movement clearly had the upper hand in public opinion.

The community's views on the Scroll controversy are clearly divided. Leo Wong, founder of the Movement ecosystem's DEX WarpGate, criticized Toghrul's attack for lacking technical basis, and accused Scroll of internal selling, exploitative token economic models, and false promises, which have made Scroll infamous and damaged the concept of a fair blockchain. He emphasized that technical criticism should be made in a respectful manner, avoiding personal attacks and smears, and that the blockchain industry needs cooperation, transparency, and trust.

Developer Andrew Capasso believes that Toghrul is evading responsibility for the team's actions by turning criticism into personal attacks and ignoring the moral damage Scroll has done to the community. He believes that responsibility and integrity are more important than technical details.

KOL Encryption Wei Tuo put forward several key points:

  1. The era of raising money by relying solely on ideology to increase valuations is over.

  2. The project owner should pay someone who understands public relations to avoid making inappropriate remarks.

  3. Project owners should respect retail investors and avoid competing with them in investment and research capabilities.

  4. It is best for project owners to experience what retail investors care about.

  5. You need to “brainwash” VCs, not “brainwash” yourself.

Rushi believes that Toghrul's technical comments have nothing to do with Scroll's poor community management, emphasizing that this is a malicious debate and that he will not tolerate insults and harm to the team.

That’s all for today’s article. We are currently in a bull market, and things are turbulent. We share passwords every day.
