A person's awakening is 1% reliant on others' reminders and 99% reliant on countless trials and tribulations. If the heart does not die, then the path does not arise; if desires are not extinguished, then the path does not exist; if the heart does not suffer, then wisdom does not open; if the body does not endure hardships, then blessings and fortunes will not be abundant.
No one's persuasion will lead you to enlightenment; it is the genuine awakening that makes you see clearly. Only those who have suffered losses and injuries, who have been brought to the brink of death and then reborn, who have found life in the face of death, can truly see the ways of the world. People cannot be awakened; they are painfully awakened, they are struck awake, they are thrown awake, they are deceived awake. If a person does not truly go through the lows, they will not wake up. Awakening relies on oneself, maturity comes in adversity, and enlightenment occurs in desperate situations.
All those who have attained great enlightenment have struggled in purgatory, with no cure, breaking themselves apart, and then reshaping themselves. If at the end of the road, then it can be a force like a broken bamboo.
