This Thursday marks exactly 12 years since the first halving in the history of BTC took place. An interesting fact: in the same year, Bitcoin first reached the price mark of $5.
On April 20, 2024, the fourth halving occurred. Now the network creates half as many coins — 3.125 new BTC every 10 minutes instead of 6.25. Almost immediately after the event, the difficulty of Bitcoin mining hit a new maximum of 88.10 T. This reaction to the halving was recorded for the first time. Ahead, Bitcoin awaits many more halvings. According to the schedule, the last one will take place only in 2140. However, deviations from the schedule are not excluded in case of any changes in the network's operation.
Halving is a special mechanism that divides the amount of reward received by miners in half. Thus, the number of new coins released into circulation gradually decreases. Halving is embedded in the Bitcoin code and occurs automatically every 210,000 blocks.
