This is James Howells.

Bitcoin is worth $700 million today.

He doesn't know exactly where he buried her.

The government won't let him dig for that.

Here is the story of the most expensive mistake in human history:

In the early days of Bitcoin, it was so inexpensive to mine that many people used their computers to do it.

Who is James Howells?

British engineer

He mined 8000 bitcoins and stored them on a memory stick 💿

In August 2013, he accidentally threw the disc in the trash.

When he realized his mistake

He made several attempts to get it back.

For more than 10 years, he tried to persuade Newport City Council to grant him permission to search for his misplaced fortune, but was denied access.

The city council did so on the grounds that the excavations had a negative environmental impact.

He assembled a team of experts, including a former senior landfill employee who knew where to look, to excavate and remediate for 3 years at no cost to the city.

He also pledged to donate 10% of the value of the quantity if the disc was recovered.

However, his offer was again rejected.

Left with little choice, he sued Newport City Council for £465m for ignoring his request for a decade.

The court hearing is scheduled for December, but James hopes to reach an agreement with the city council without a legal battle.

Stories like this remind us how important it is to protect our digital assets. Here are 3 ways to protect your money today:

1 Keep your currency storage devices safely away:

If you use a hardware or USB wallet to store your crypto assets, make sure to keep it in a safe place.

Avoid keeping it with other general purpose storage devices to prevent accidental disposal.

Verify your assets:

Make it a habit to check your assets often. This helps ensure that your storage methods remain secure.

Ensure proper key management:

Backing up private keys/seed phrases carries with it a degree of risk.

Physical backups are vulnerable to theft, damage or loss while digital storage can be hacked if not done properly.
