🇷🇺 Russia tightens crypto mining in some regions from December
Increased electricity demand in winter has caused some regions in Russia to fall into a state of energy shortage. To reduce the load on the system and direct miners to areas with excess electricity, the government has imposed a ban in:
- Irkutsk, Buryatia, Zabaykalsky: Ban during peak season (December 1 - March 15) every year until 2031.
- North Caucasus, Kherson, Donetsk...: Complete ban until March 15, 2031.
Although this decision has a significant impact on the local economy, the government hopes to improve the quality of electricity supply for people.
Russia is the second largest Crypto mining country in the world after the US, consuming 2.7 GW, accounting for 1.9% of the country's total electricity. In 2023, Russian miners mined more than $3.5 billion worth of Bitcoin.
