Before Donald Trump took the stage, Fox News declared Pennsylvania for Trump, just 3 electoral votes away from reaching the necessary 270 votes to win the presidential election. Hundreds of Trump supporters at the convention center cheered excitedly as the news broke.
David Axelrod, former advisor to President Obama, spoke on CNN before Pennsylvania was announced: "Part of democracy is respecting the will of the people, respecting its institutions. I think that's what the Vice President will do as well."
In Washington, D.C., Kamala Harris supporters began to leave the watch party at Howard in tears. Although the evening started off jubilantly, their mood gradually turned somber as the final results did not favor Harris. Harris's absence from her own party reminded many of the 2016 election, when Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton also did not speak at the party in the Javits Center, New York, after it became clear Trump would win.
Although Trump is still 3 electoral votes short of officially becoming President, his victory in Pennsylvania left Harris with no path to the White House.
