AMLBot disclosed a case of "close-range intrusion" where the former CEO of a cryptocurrency project lost $450,000 after connecting to a "trusted friend's" WiFi. The victim, Tom (pseudonym), had previously sold his company shares for $500,000 and moved to Asia. After meeting a "trusted friend" locally, Tom's phone was damaged by rain. After repairs and re-entering his mnemonic phrase, he discovered his funds had been stolen. AMLBot's investigation found that the funds were transferred to a Binance account, and further tracing revealed that Tom's "trusted friend" had hacked into his device via the WiFi network. Currently, Binance has frozen the related accounts. Tom has recovered $380,000, and the remaining $70,000 will be repaid in installments. AMLBot reminds users to never access cryptocurrency websites or wallets on public WiFi networks and recommends enabling transaction notification features. (Decrypt)
