Hostage in Nigeria: Binance Exec's Desperate Plea

Eighteen U.S. state attorneys general have issued a joint letter to President Biden, urging him to secure the release of Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, who has been held in Nigeria since February 2024. Gambaryan, a former U.S. federal agent, is reportedly being used as leverage against Binance by Nigerian authorities. The attorneys general are pushing for his detention to be classified as hostage-taking under the Robert Levinson Hostage Recovery and Hostage-Taking Accountability Act.

Concerns over Gambaryan’s health have grown since his detention, with his wife, Yuki, speaking out in August, warning of his deteriorating condition, which may result in permanent damage and impair his ability to walk. Despite the seriousness of his situation, a court hearing scheduled for October 18 was postponed, leaving his future uncertain until the next hearing on October 25.

Gambaryan, a key figure in bringing Binance into compliance with U.S. law, is hailed as a hero by the attorneys general, who emphasize his distinguished career in the U.S. Inland Revenue Service. They argue that his detention lacks legal justification and is politically motivated. The letter calls on Biden to prioritize the case, stressing the urgency of securing his release before further damage is done to his health.

With mounting pressure from lawmakers and his family’s public appeals, the question remains: Will President Biden act in time to rescue Gambaryan?
