Created a fake Coinbase site and raised $20 million

An Indian hacker, who has stolen a total of 20 million dollars since 2021 through the fake Coinbase site he created, was arrested at the airport in the USA. It is seen that this person spends the money he stole on luxury cars and watches.

In one of the identity forgery and phishing-style hacking incidents, which have started to be seen a lot in the cryptocurrency world in recent years, the thief gave away the collar. This person, who faked the website of Coinbase, one of the most used exchanges in the world, managed to direct customers here and seized their information through trapped links.

Caught at the airport

According to the information given by the US Department of Justice, the 31-year-old fraudster Chirag Tomar was caught at the Atlanta airport in the USA in December 2023. The court, which has been going on since then, has just concluded and the Indian fraudster was sentenced to 5 years in prison. The fraudster also admitted the allegations.

He collected 20 million, enjoyed it

It was stated that Tomar collected information from people who entered the fake site for about 2 years, and also obtained personal information by establishing a fake call center by Coinbase. Tomar, who entered the accounts of real Coinbase users through this information, made a $20 million dollar profit.

The 31-year-old Indian bought more than one Lamborghini and Porsche. With expensive watches, luxury trips in Thailand and Dubai were also part of the expenses.

In the cryptocurrency world, the number of "trap link" attacks has increased significantly in the recent period. Users who click on these links, especially sent via e-mails, may lose control of their wallets.

Recently, an account that approved the trap link post had more than $30 million in cryptocurrency stolen.
